# The Azulejo Trail: Lisbon's Tiles and a Hands-On Workshop

**Guidekin's take:** Our own azulejo walk that teaches you to read the tiles on façades, churches and metro stations, then a hands on painting session in a working studio with all materials and your finished tile to take home. Shipping the tile and food are extra. €55 per person for 3h 30m.

## Overview

Lisbon wears its history on its walls. The azulejos, the blue and white tiles that cover façades, churches and even metro stations, are everywhere once you start looking, and each one has a story. This walk teaches you to read them, then puts a brush in your hand so you can paint your own.

We start in the streets, tracing tiles from grand baroque panels to the everyday patterns on a corner shop, while your guide explains how a Moorish craft became Portugal's signature. Then we head into a working ceramics studio, where you'll glaze and paint a tile to take home the centuries-old way, with plenty of help and no pressure to be Picasso.

You leave with your own piece of Lisbon, still smelling faintly of the kiln, and an eye that will never walk past a tiled wall the same way again.

## Itinerary

1. **Tiled façades of the old town** (30m) - We start in the streets, reading tiles from grand panels to everyday patterns.
2. **A baroque tile church or palace** (30m) - The blue-and-white storytelling panels that made azulejo famous.
3. **Azulejo in unexpected places** (20m) - Even the metro and corner shops wear them, once you start looking.
4. **The ceramics studio** (1h 15m) - Brush in hand: glaze and paint your own tile the centuries-old way.
5. **Your tile, your way** (25m) - We tell the story of the craft while your piece sets.
