**Guidekin's take:** Our own walk through Porto's two signature materials, blue tiles and gold: the painted vaults of São Bento station, the Capela das Almas and the gilt interiors of the baroque churches, with a guide who reads the tiles as a story. ## Overview

Porto tells its story in two materials: blue tiles and gold. This walk follows both. We start under the painted vaults of São Bento station, where thousands of azulejos turn a train hall into a history book, then wind through the old centre where every other church hides a baroque surprise.

You'll stand before the cascading tilework of the Capela das Almas, look up at the Clérigos tower that watches over the whole city, and step into interiors so heavy with carved gilt they seem to glow. Your guide reads the tiles like pages, the saints, the battles, the everyday scenes, and explains how a small Atlantic city poured its wealth into beauty.

1. **São Bento Station** (30m) - Thousands of blue azulejos turn a train hall into a painted history of Portugal.
2. **Capela das Almas** (25m) - A whole church wrapped in cascading blue-and-white tilework.
3. **Clérigos Church and Tower** (30m) - The baroque landmark that watches over Porto's rooftops.
4. **A gilded baroque interior** (25m) - Carved woodwork heavy with gold, glowing in the candlelight.
5. **The tiled old centre** (20m) - We finish wandering the lanes where tiles turn up everywhere.
