# Foz and the Atlantic: Porto's Seaside Walk

**Guidekin's take:** Our own relaxed walk from the old town along the river out to Foz and the Atlantic, past the little fort, the gardens, the Pergola and the lighthouse, ending at the ocean front terraces most visitors never reach. Food and drinks are not included. From €36 per person for 3h.

## Overview

Most visitors never see the sea, and that's their loss. Where the Douro finally meets the Atlantic, Porto turns into a breezy seaside town: lighthouses, crashing surf, palm-lined promenades and the smell of salt. This relaxed walk follows the river out to the ocean and along the coast.

We trace the waterfront from the old town down to Foz, the city's elegant seaside quarter, past the little fort, the gardens and the Pergola where locals stroll on a Sunday. The Atlantic does the rest: waves breaking on the rocks, the red-and-white lighthouse standing guard, and a string of terraces perfect for a coffee or a sundowner with your feet almost in the spray.

It's Porto with the volume turned down, the side the postcards forget. Bring a light jacket, the ocean breeze has opinions.

## Itinerary

1. **The riverside out of the centre** (25m) - We start where the Douro widens and follow it toward the sea.
2. **Foz do Douro** (30m) - Porto's elegant seaside quarter, where the river meets the ocean.
3. **The Pergola and the promenade** (25m) - A palm-lined seafront walk where locals stroll on Sundays.
4. **The Foz lighthouse and the Atlantic** (25m) - Waves on the rocks and the red-and-white lighthouse standing guard.
5. **A sundowner by the sea** (20m) - We finish on an ocean-front terrace as the day winds down.
