# Port Wine Across the River: The Cellars of Gaia

**Guidekin's take:** Our own walk across the Dom Luís I bridge to the Gaia lodges where Port is actually aged, with a cellar visit between the barrels and a tasting flight of white, tawny and ruby, led by a guide who knows the wine and its history. ## Overview

Port wine carries the name of the city, but it's made and aged just across the water, in the cool dark lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia. This walk takes you there the proper way: over the Dom Luís I bridge on foot, down to the quay where the old rabelo boats once hauled the barrels downriver, and into the cellars themselves.

You'll learn how port is made and why Gaia's misty riverside is perfect for ageing it, walk between towering rows of barrels, and taste your way through a flight, a white, a tawny and a ruby, with someone who can actually tell you what you're drinking. The view back across to Porto's tumbling houses isn't a bad backdrop either.

Easygoing, unhurried, and a proper introduction to the city's most famous export.

## Itinerary

1. **Praça da Ribeira** (20m) - We gather on the Porto riverfront, Gaia's cellars in view across the water.
2. **Across the Dom Luís I bridge** (25m) - On foot over the great iron bridge, the Douro far below.
3. **The Gaia quay and rabelo boats** (25m) - The boats that once carried port downriver, moored along the bank.
4. **A port wine cellar** (1h) - Towering rows of barrels and a tasting of white, tawny and ruby.
5. **A toast over the river** (20m) - We finish with the view back across to Porto.
