Madeira's levadas are irrigation channels built from the 15th century. The maintenance paths alongside them form over 2,500 km of walking trails through laurel forest, cliff edges, and volcanic ravines.
The top routes: PR6 to 25 Fontes ends at a waterfall and lagoon inside the Laurissilva forest, about three hours round trip. PR1 connects Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo along an exposed ridge with 1,500 m drops on both sides. Levada do Caldeirão Verde follows an irrigation channel through tunnels to a 100-meter waterfall. Each trail has a different character and difficulty level.
