Foz and the Atlantic: Porto's Seaside Walk

Most visitors never see the sea, and that's their loss. Where the Douro finally meets the Atlantic, Porto turns into a breezy seaside town: lighthouses, crashing surf, palm-lined promenades and the smell of salt. This relaxed walk follows the river out to the ocean and along the coast.

We trace the waterfront from the old town down to Foz, the city's elegant seaside quarter, past the little fort, the gardens and the Pergola where locals stroll on a Sunday. The Atlantic does the rest: waves breaking on the rocks, the red-and-white lighthouse standing guard, and a string of terraces perfect for a coffee or a sundowner with your feet almost in the spray.
