Porto at Golden Hour: Ribeira, the River and the Bridge

Porto saves its best for the end of the day. As the sun drops behind the river, the Ribeira's tiled houses catch fire, the great iron bridge turns to lace against the sky, and the whole city leans toward the water. This evening walk follows that light.

We wander the Ribeira's arcades and alleys down to the quay, where the rabelo boats that once carried port wine still bob at their moorings. Then we climb to the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge for the view everyone comes to Porto for: Gaia's cellars glowing gold across the Douro, the river turning to copper below.
