Lisbon by Bike: The Riverside Ride to Belém

Lisbon's hills are famous, but its river is flat, and that's the secret to seeing the city the easy way. This relaxed bike ride follows the Tagus westward, trading the tram queues for an open promenade and the breeze off the water, all the way out to Belém.

We roll past the docks and the riverside cafés, under the great red bridge, and out to where Portugal's age of discovery is written in stone. You'll have time off the saddle at the Belém Tower, the Discoveries Monument and the Jerónimos Monastery, with your guide filling in the stories. And yes, there's a stop for a warm pastel de Belém, where they've been baking them since 1837.

It's gentle, mostly flat, and suits anyone comfortable on a bike. No racing, no hills, just the river, the light and the monuments at an easy pace.
